Methodological Nationalism and Normative Nationalism
Methodological Nationalism is linked to the social scientific observer perspective.
Normative Nationalism refers to the negotiation perspective of political actors.
In a normative sense, nationalism means that every nation has the right to self determination within the frame of its cultural distinctiveness
Methodological Nationalism assumes this normative claim as a socio-ontological given simultaneously links to the most important conflict and organisations of society and politics.
Methodological Nationalism includes the following principles:

- The subordination of society to state, which implies notion of societies with state-constructed boundaries, i.e, the territorial state as container .
- There is no singular, but only plural of societies
- A territorial notion of societies with state - constructed boundaries, i.e, the territorial state as container of society.
- There is a circular determination between state and society: The territorial nation state is both the creator and gurantor of the individual citizenship rights and citizen
